Chronic back pain caused by spinal fractures can drastically impact your quality of life, making even the simplest tasks feel unbearable. Fortunately, advancements in medical technology have made treatments like kyphoplasty a reliable and minimally invasive option for relieving pain and restoring mobility. At Greater Austin Pain Center, our team of pain doctors specializes in procedures like kyphoplasty, helping patients achieve lasting relief.
What is a Kyphoplasty?
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to treat vertebral compression fractures (VCFs), which are common in individuals with osteoporosis, cancer, or spinal injuries. These fractures occur when vertebrae collapse, causing pain, reduced mobility, and changes in posture. Kyphoplasty helps alleviate pain, stabilize the spine, and restore the height of the affected vertebra.
The procedure involves inserting a small balloon into the fractured vertebra, which is then inflated to create space. Once the desired height is restored, a special bone cement is injected to stabilize the area and prevent further collapse. This outpatient procedure typically takes less than an hour per vertebra and has a high success rate for pain relief and improved function.
